Kings View is a nonprofit leader in providing behavioral health services to the underserved community, currently seeking a driven Patient Rights Advocate to join our mission to provide compassionate services to those with limited resources. The Patients' Rights Advocate is responsible for promoting and protecting the rights of individuals receiving mental health services. This role includes providing information, addressing concerns, and ensuring compliance with California law regarding patients' rights.

How will I contribute

• Protect the rights and interests of mental health clients by providing direct assistance and support.
• Receive and investigate complaints from clients in licensed health and community care facilities.
• Train mental health staff on patients' rights and the legal framework governing mental health services.
• Ensure facilities comply with regulations regarding patient rights.
• Inform clients about their rights through discussions, meetings, and informational materials.
• Advocate for mental health consumers within the county.
• Address client concerns and ensure access to appropriate services.
• Collaborate with mental health programs to promote compliance with applicable laws.
• Conduct outreach initiatives to raise awareness of clients' rights and available resources.
• Gather and analyze client feedback to identify trends and areas for improvement.
• Maintain documentation related to advocacy efforts and client interactions.
• Participate in meetings and committees to represent clients' interests.
• May encounter risk of working with persons with SMI (serious mental illness) that may include, but not limited to persons in mental health crisis, persons that may be intoxicated or impaired by drugs or alcohol, persons who may be DTO (danger to others), DTS (Danger to Self), or GD (Gravely Disabled). If such situations arise, staff will be required to call local emergency personnel to help deescalate the crisis, use crisis intervention techniques, and consult with supervisor as soon as practically possible.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.

What I bring

• Highschool Diploma (or Equivalent)
• Class C Driving License
• 3 years of experience in advocacy, social services, or a related field is required, preferably within a mental health setting. Candidates should have a demonstrated understanding of patients' rights and relevant laws, along with experience in providing support and training to individuals and groups. Experience in conflict resolution and client advocacy is also beneficial for this role.
• Specialized knowledge for this position includes an understanding of mental health laws and patients' rights, as well as advocacy practices and complaint resolution processes. Familiarity with resources and services within the mental health system is essential for effectively supporting clients and upholding their rights. Additionally, knowledge of cultural competency and sensitivity can enhance the advocate's ability to serve diverse populations effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication skills, empathy, and a commitment to advocating for the rights of mental health clients. The advocate should demonstrate a high level of integrity and professionalism, along with the ability to remain calm and composed in challenging situations. Additionally, strong problem-solving skills and the capacity to work collaboratively with various stakeholders are essential for effectively addressing client needs and concerns. Adaptability and a proactive approach to advocacy are also important traits for success in this role.
• Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, public health, or related. Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred
