Please join the Carthage Dramatic Reading Society at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Niemann Theater in Hedberg Library for a dramatic reading of “A Christmas Carol” based on Charles Dickens’s own dramatic readings of his haunting and comic tale of greed, ghosts, mutual aid, and transformation.
Written in response to the oppressive working conditions in Victorian England, this story remains all too relevant in our times. Ebenezer Scrooge’s response to two gentlemen seeking donations for the poor is as chilling now as it was then: “… are there no prisons?”
Our reading, given by students in the English 2080 course, “Embodied Reading: Speaking Poems, Plays, and Stories,” is divided between three groups of three readers, each performing the role of the narrator and other characters.
The script, based on Dickens’s editing of his short story for public readings and further edited and formatted by Richard Di Prima, brings the story to life over five sections, or staves. Each of the first four staves centers on the visit of a ghost to that famous master of greed and efficiency, Ebenezer Scrooge. The final stave presents a Scrooge changed by these visitations.
