We offer a July volunteer internship experience in The BraveWave Program, a week-long summer treatment program for young children with selective mutism (SM), an anxiety disorder, similar to social anxiety disorder, causing children to have difficulty speaking in social situations. We are looking for undergraduate volunteers interested in a summer internship experience which would include learning about early childhood anxiety and SM and helping with behavioral therapy for these children.
BraveWave, serving children ages 3 to 9 with SM, simulates a school/camp environment to provide opportunities for practicing and participating and speaking in school-like situations. Children are paired one-to-one with a counselor (e.g., volunteer intern) each day of the program and this counselor will help the child speak and participate during various activities of the day (e.g., morning meeting, lunch, asking to go to the bathroom, show & tell, etc.). There is a lot of preparation required prior to the start of the program, including “lead-in” sessions to prepare children and help with various tasks and activity preparation.
Volunteers should only apply if they meet the following criteria:
Undergraduate or post-graduate in psychology, child development or related major
Previous experience working with children
Ability to commit to the below-mentioned times
The time commitments for volunteers are as follows. We require that all volunteers are available and present for all hours of training and all hours of the program week listed below:
Training will occur Sunday July 13 9am-4pm (breakfast and lunch provided)
The intensive camp week will occur Monday July 28th through Friday August 1st 7:30am-2pm each day.
Between the training and the start of the camp, we request that interns agree to be available for at least 5 hours per week, the two weeks prior to the start of the program, to participate in SM treatment sessions and help prepare for the week-long intensive.
Strong volunteers may be offered other volunteer opportunities in the clinic after summer.
